We have now been rearing calves a number of years for Meadow Quality. We started rearing 400 calves a year but since then, by working closely with the calf rearing team, our business has been able to grow to 1600 calves a year. Four years ago we were given the chance to become a dedicated AFU rearing unit and the regular rearing contacts that came with this gave us confidence to expand.
We began rearing with Meadow Quality as we share many values, we both have calf health and welfare as the number one priority, from the calves being transported to and from the collection centres to the calves leaving our farm and beyond. The fieldsmen make regular visits which enables us to work closely together to ensure the calves enter and leave the unit at the optimum time for both us and the onward customer. We have a very good relationship with the administration staff which makes it seem more like a small family business as there is always somebody at the end of the phone willing to go above and beyond to help. We are also very impressed with the additional training given via meetings with other rearers and key note speakers giving us an insight into the latest industry information.

I have traded with Meadow Quality for over 10 years. The main reason we have traded for so long, and intend to keep doing so, is the relationship we have with Meadow Quality and our fieldsman Stuart Vile. Stuart aims to get us the best return for our finished stock. This is more than sending them where the price per kg is highest, it entails knowing where the stock will grade highest and the kill out ratio too. My son now rears calves and sources his calves from the weekly collection centre, he has been pleased with the quality and evenness of the batches received.

We have sold our pigs though Meadow Quality for over 20 years. They are regular visitors to our Farm and have a good understanding of the operation of our units and the particular ethos under which we operate. I have 300 ewes – 150 Scots half bred ewes crossed with a Suffolk to produce ewe lambs for my own flock and to sell on as replacements and 150 Suffolk X Scots half breed crossed with a Charollais. Creep fed lambs are sold during June and July, with the remainder being sold off grass after harvest. In addition, one of the Meadow Quality lamb collection centres is based on my farm.
