Meadow Quality Team Building 2018
The calf team meeting on Thursday was well attended. Georgina Thomas from Trouw Nutrition started the day with an interesting and informative talk on calf nutrition.
We engaged in an exercise deciphered the milk powder label, looking through key ingredients and compositions to identify quality and digestibility. This information will help the team and also our customers when we are recommending protocols and evaluating existing regimes.
Trouw are currently focussed on research and development spanning both dairy and beef calves. One trial is looking at the impact of powder on a cows lifetime performance and traits into future calves. Georgina explained the nutritional needs of a calf pre-weaning and its impact on total internal development and growth. She showed how a calves phenotype can be influenced by a consistent rearing protocol and feeding regime. The importance of choosing a milk powder and feeding systems to maximise efficiency and suit the farms requirement is paramount, there is no one size fits all! The nutritional impact of the first 50 days of a calves life on the ultimate finishing time of a dairy beef animal is substantial and it cannot be denied a good start assists a better finish.
After the meeting the team moved on to canoeing and the escape room challenges! There were most definitely some rocking boats and a bit of splashing. Lost oars were retrieved and no-one was fully submerged although waves of laughter were certainly present! The escape rooms were great fun and the time flew. Problem solving and puzzles against the clock got the team working together in a completely different way which was great to see.
